Most players focus on the playing surface, the finish, the frame. The legs get ignored until something goes wrong. That is backwards, because no component in your setup absorbs more cumulative stress.
Every time you fold and unfold your boards, you are cycling load through the hinge pivot, the leg-to-frame connection and the fasteners holding all of it together. Multiply that by a full season of tournaments and backyard sessions and you have a hardware system that has been worked hard. For competition play, you need to know which one you are looking at.
Run your fingers across every bolt head, nut and bracket. Flaking rust, soft spots or visible pitting are signs that the hardware has corroded beyond cosmetic. A fastener that crumbles under light pressure with a screwdriver tip needs to come out before you play a single game on that board.
Next, check bolt tension. Thermal expansion and contraction cycles work fasteners loose over time even without any corrosion. Use the appropriate driver or wrench and confirm that every bolt is snug. If a bolt spins freely or feels like it is catching stripped threads, replace it before re-torquing anything around it.
Hardware-grade fasteners and corrosion-resistant finishes are a baseline expectation at the tournament level. A small amount is normal on older hardware; a noticeable amount means the pivot has worn beyond its tolerance and the hinge is no longer doing its job cleanly.
Before you decide to replace a hinge, confirm that lubrication is not the issue. A hinge that grinds, squeaks or resists movement but shows no lateral play may need a light application of dry lubricant or silicone spray at the pivot point. Work it through a few fold cycles and recheck. If the resistance clears and the pivot stays tight, you are done. If the slop is still there after lubrication, the hinge needs to come out.
Do not stop at the hinge itself. Check the mounting points where the hinge attaches to the board frame. Vertical storage, standing boards on their folded edge against a wall, distributes that load more evenly and keeps the hinge from sitting under sustained compression.
Temperature and humidity are the other variables you can partially control. Hardware corrosion accelerates above 60 percent relative humidity, and unheated garages in most climates will exceed that threshold during winter months. A dehumidifier in the storage space is the most effective solution; short of that, storing boards in sealed bags or cases reduces direct humidity exposure significantly.
End-of-season prep takes less time than a single game:
